Picture Bonanza

Taran has started dancing recently - it is the cutest thing to see him shake his head and upper body...sometimes to the best of his own drum. Here he is busting a move in the bumbo....
Papa got a brand new guitar....a SRV stratocaster replica. Logan had to get in on the act. I just love Shane's hand on his shoulder here....
Taran trying out the backpack we are borrowing from Miss Sue at daycare! Works great!
In the Mei Tai while we were cutting down our Christmas tree

Those last few are pretty self-explanatory, yes???

Taran's first solids on his 6 month-versary - mashed banana. This was the last time he so willingly allowed a spoon containing something to enter his mouth. He is not a fan of solids!
Logan making chocolate pennies using a kit his Auntie Wendy sent from England. It's good to check your 'cooking' along the way!
Crazy Taran - this is my little man to a 'T'.
Santa's elves!
The HUGE tree finally decorated.

Xmas cards and pictures

We don't have our Christmas cards in yet - apparently they arrived with the photographer today so I am hoping to have them tomorrow at the latest. Watch your mail boxes for a card from us in the next week!

I have to take some pictures of the tree now it's decorated and then I will post - this blog is very light on the pictures don't you think? I have been playing around with the settings on the camera, trying to learn a bit more about photography. My friends have these fancy Nikon SLR camera and one in particular takes amazing photographs. I would like to develop some talent in this arena rather than just be a point and shooters (which has been my mode of operation to date). Anyway, coming up soon a big picture post.

Hello!!! Is this thing on?

Oh joy that is the winter season! Got a call from daycare yesterday afternoon - Taran had suspected conjunctivitis. I left work as soon as I could, picked up both boys and went home. The first doctor appt I could get was 6:10. Turns out Mr. T has both an ear and eye infection....well that certainly would explain the past three days/nights of Cranky McCrank pants!

But let me back up....did anyone see the reports of the ice storm in the north east on Thursday night? We lost power on Friday morning at 2am and got it restored on Saturday evening at 8pm. Shane took my Mum and the kids to his Nana's on Friday while he toured around looking for a generator. Not able to find one, he borrowed her's and brought it back to the house. So Friday night, we at least had heat eventually about 10pm. Thankfully we have a wood fireplace, so until then we were in front of that with the kids asleep in mine and Grandma's arms.

Saturday, I had a car seat donation locally for the foundation to do at our local fire station (they cancelled the regular car seat clinic as the town was pretty much entirely out of power) and then I zipped back home to pick up the kids and my Mum and we booked it down to my work for the Children's Holiday party. Being the sly fox that I am, I packed stuff for us to take showers at work, so after the boys saw Santa, we headed into the 'ladies' and Logan and Taran showered with me and I passed them each out to my Mum while I showered. Then once I was ready, my Mum took a shower. Nice to feel human again. Once we were all ready, we headed off to a family birthday party (after I went home to pick up Shane who now had the hot water also going at the house off the generator).

We got home and Shane decided to move the generator to the rear of the house so he could run a couple of cables up to the family room to give his some light and the TV. Bad move.....he couldn't get the generator to start again and spent about an hour working on it. Finally, he got it going but only minutes later the power came back on.

Oh yeah, fun times!

Sunday we were supposed to take the boys to the farm for their holiday festival (complete with Santa...again!), but my friend whom we were meeting there called to say it was closed due to no power. I took the opportunity of the day at home with no plans to finally decorate. The family room tree is up, the christmas village was set up and the lights on the banisters in the foyer are done. Still to do the foyer tree, but that's another story and project!

So, Taran is at home with grandma today....and Logan did NOT want to go to school today. He's been very upset at drop off in the morning for a couple of weeks. Not sure what is going on there - I think he fancied being home since Taran was today, but there is something underlying going on that we need to get to the bottom of.

Hump Day Musings

The first thing to report this morning, which is quite alarming to me, is that over the past week of vomiting, Taran has lost 1lbs 12oz. I weighed him last Monday on his 6 months-versary and he was 17lbs 12oz on our digital bathroom scale. I've noticed over the course of this tummy bug that he felt lighter in my arms and his chubby face was getting to be not so chubby. I weighed him this morning to get the low down on exactly what he has lost - he was 16lbs even this morning. Woa!!! The good thing is that he is beginning to actually show signs of hunger this morning for the first time in a week - previously he was just eating to get by I think. I nursed him at 5am and at 6am he was really cranky! Being a little gun-shy of getting puked on constantly if I nurse him any more frequently than 2 hours, I was a little slow on the uptake that he was in fact hungry. I popped the trusty boob in there and he latched on and began sucking....with no adverse consequences.

I increased his bottle amounts at daycare to 3 oz from 2.5 today to slowly up the volume so as not to overwhelm is obviously still weak and sensitive tummy. My poor baby though! At 6 months, he should have been going through a growth spurt not a tummy bug. Of course, I worry that he missed that spurt and will be set back on his growth a little.

This is a little theory of mine regarding Logan's small size. When he was between 4 and 6 months old, he had two tummy bugs and two (before we worked it out) boughts of food reaction (to sweet potatoes). I have often thought that this early sickness greatly contributed to his small size (35 inches and 27lbs at his 3 year WBV).

I was really happy to see Taran be the chubber baby that he was, growing so well....hoping that he would put on the weight better than his brother. Oh well - he has his 6 month WBV in about a week's time so I will discuss my concerns with his doctor then.

In other news, the mashed banana took quite the back seat since last Mon/Tues and Shane tried to get him to take some again yesterday - no interest at all at the moment. Not that I am all gung-ho on getting solids into him, but again from his real interest in our food and his penchant for eating, I thought Taran was going to be quite the gannit right off the bat. Still, early days, but we haven't graduated from mashed up banana thinned with expressed milk yet. Next up....Advocado!!!

My Mum arrives tonight from Scotland for a 5 week visit - her flight gets in around 9pm though so Shane has both boys for bedtime tonight - for the first time ever. This will be Taran's first time of a bottle at bedtime. I am sure they will all cope well...but I suspect I will come home to a husband that hasn't eaten even yet at 10pm!

So I never updated about our tree, did I? Well, it is still undecorated at the moment. Why, you might ask? Well, it has fallen down twice, broken our stand and is quite honestly FAR too big for the room. Last night we took it to task; duct taped the stand back together, because of course two weeks before Christmas and EVERYWHERE is sold out of live tree stands - argh! I had to put in a trash can liner inside so that we can water it. Oh, here's a top tip - when you first get your tree up and into your home, pour in a 2 litre bottle of Sprite into the stand - it will make your tree last longer. Course, our tree has been in the house for a week and a half with no water due to falling down and stand issues. So, we managed to jimmy the stand into something that would work, get the tree somewhat upright and have it tied up also so that it doesn't inconveniently fall down again either overnight, or worse, on top of someone. I guess I will begin decorating on Thursday evening though how I am going to accomplish that, I have no scooby! The thing is seriously 12 feet tall!!! I don't have a V ladder, just one that leans against a wall, so the top of the tree may not be as trimmed as it might have been.

And of course, I have to admit that the only other Christmas decoration that is up is the wreath on the front door. Pretty bad considering we went out the weekend after Thanksgiving to get the tree and I had high hopes of having all the decorations done that same weekend.

I am encouraged at how the raffle is progressing....it could be doing much better of course, but I have pretty much gotten the word out to every where and every how I can think of. If you are reading this blog, please spread the word about the raffle - we have so many children on our waiting list needing a car seat - many of them in danger either in nothing at all, or 2 years old in a booster seat already.

Speaking of which, I am of course the car seat pest at work. I spotted a picture of a cute little girl on one of our new guys' computer background so I open my dialog and bring up rear-facing etc....of course, she'd just turned 1 year old and they had turned her forward-facing. Argh! Thankfully, the guys was REALLY listening to me and that day we went out to his truck to turn the seat back around and just check all is good. Well, what do I see but an old Century over head shield seat in there with no labels! ACK! This thing probably came in the ark! I told him it was most likely expired (and of course, he had no idea car seats expired!). He agreed - it had been used for both his two older boys. So they now are using my seat that I got for Taran in the recent Britax tech deal (discontined Boulevard patterns for $150 each - I got the max 3 of them). They will be buying two new seats this weekend and I will take my Boulevard back.

One child at a time......;)

Dammit!!!

Argh - I just spilled about 2 ounces of pumped milk INTO my keyboard! It seems to still be working. Grrrr!!! What a PITA!

Well, it's been a weekend of puking for me....Taran was sent home on Wednesday and spent Thursday and Friday at home (I was home on Friday). Then Logan puked Thursday night, but was fine all day Saturday so I took him to Maya's birthday party - we were having a blast till he put in a big bit of pizza, choked a bit and then announced he was going to be sick...which has was, but thankfully we made it to the toilet. Shane was sick on Saturday morning and Taran was still being sick on Sunday. Thankfully Logan was fine after the party incident and Shane was fine on Sunday. I am fine so far - just a sniffle in the nose. But MAN, I am tired! Tired of being puked on! I held Taran pretty much ALL day yesterday - even when he was sleeping.

I took him to the doctor on Friday - just a tummy bug and to nurse through it - little amounts and often. Well, that's the problem with nursing - you can't tell how much is going into his tummy, and I always seem to underestimate it...which leads to me wearing most of my milk pretty quickly thereafter. So, Sunday, I pumped and Taran got bottles so we could really give his tummy a fighting chance for the muscles to get a rest from vomiting. He did well overnight nursing for a few minutes and then going back to sleep. No sickies then, so I sent him to school today with lots of little bottles with instructions to feed him often. No calls yet, so I guess that's working today too.

Ugh - I hate the sickies season!

Thoughts on being a Mom of boys

This article pretty much sums up my thoughts and emotions on having no daughter...

http://parenting.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/12/04/mom-of-boys/?hp

Pink is torture! Pretty girls clothes mother/daughter visits to the ballet get me misty eyed. Of course, everyone around me is announcing either births of girls, gender ultrasounds showing girls, girls, girls, girls!

I do have to take a picture of Taran asleep in his pink miracle blanket though - if only for blackmail purposes later on in life!!! ;)

Win a Car Seat package prize and support the foundation!!!

You may notice a button at the top of my blog - the foundation is running a raffle fundraiser and I want everyone to get the work out. Please copy the code below the button into your blogs as a text box addition:

OK, so what are the prizes???

Well, the lucky winner (selected at random) will receive a Safeguard ChildSeat Car Seat. The Safeguard Child Seat is a forward-facing only seat which harnesses to 65lbs. To learn more about this amazing seat, please read the information here - Safeguard ChildSeat

Not only that, but you will also receive a medium sized Car Seat Poncho - did you know that it is not safe to secure a child into a harness or seatbelt when they are wearing their winter jacket? The layers of a jacket will compress in a crash causing the harness to be too loose on the child. This could cause injury or ejection from the restraint.

And as if that was not enough, we will also be giving the lucky winner a $100 gift certificate to Hip Monkey that you can spend any way you wish. Hip Monkey stocks car seats and accessories, hip baby gear and safety items. All proceeds from sales at Hip Monkey benefit the Kyle David Miller Foundation.

Please spread the word and buy your raffle ticket today - suggested donation is $10. You can enter as many times as you like to increase your chances of winning.

If you would like to enter without making a donation, please leave a comment on this post with your name, address and email address so I can contact you. Void where prohibited. No purchase necessary. Comments are screened.

Want to win a big camera prize package and donate to a charity at the same time?

Mummy's milk builds 'em big!

6 months old today!

Taran is 6 months old today! I meant to weigh him on our bathroom scale to see how many pounds Mummy's milk had packed onto him. I will do that tonight. We celebrated with mashed banana thinned with breastmilk. He certainly had fun though I doubt much was ingested! I forgot how messy solids are!!!

We took pictures this morning, so I will upload them tonight and post tomorrow.

Yesterday we went to cut down a Christmas Tree. This is the first time we have ever done this! I took tons of pictures (also to be uploaded) and played about with the settings on the camera trying to get a better feel for digital photography beyond my previous 'set it on auto and go' methodology. I think there are a few good ones in there from what I quickly saw on the LCD screen.

But the tree.....or should I say the forest that is currently in our family room? Uh huh - well, it reaches the roof in our cathedral ceiling room. It's probably 12 feet tall. Didn't look that big in the field. Ummmm. Should be interesting trying to decorate it nevermind trying to get it back out of the house. Getting it into the house already caused some damage - eek! Seriously, when you walk from the kitchen towards the family room, you nearly jump out of your skin cause there is a forest in there! Smells nice though!!!

I'll take some pictures of the trimming trials and tribulations that are sure to follow. Gah!

Can men breastfeed???
